Proud to be an ambassador and donate to the bursary - providing access to the very best of education for young people.

Wellington school taught me the art of communication, which remains the top skill prized by recruiters inspite of the tech revolution.

I could not have pursued a successful career in education and several other professions without attending Wellinton School. It was close run thing, to cite the Iron Duke, as the scholarship I attained meant my parents could afford for me to attend from the age of 11- 18. Coming from a primary school still in the throws of the late 1960s experiments in education, which in parts was detrimental to my progress, Wellinton School put me back on track to achieve both my academic potential and creative ability. That is the essence of Wellington school it nurtures you to pursue your academic and extra curricular talents; be that in academia, drama, music and the arts or sporting prowess.

What does Wellington School mean to me? Wellington set me on the path that my life has taken over the last three decades. I knew from the age of 10 that I wanted to be a lawyer. I blame the TV programme ‘L.A. Law’ (my generation’s version of ‘Suits’) personally.
At that time, I was attending a primary school where I had already completed my last year of studies a year early and I was desperate to learn. My parents recognised this desire and talked to me about sitting the entrance exam for Wellington school. It was only the second exam that I had ever taken in my life, and I remember it clearly to this day, especially the fish fingers, chips and beans served up in the dining hall afterwards!
I was ecstatic to find out that I had been successful in being awarded an Assisted Place. This meant the world to me and my family and even the thought of getting four buses a day, six days a week for the next seven years did not dull my enthusiasm.
Being at Wellington afforded me the opportunity to develop my academic, sporting, and musical talents in the most supportive and beautiful environment. The tuition I received was second to none, with some incredibly dedicated and committed teachers who really cared about their students. I was the first female scorer for the school’s 1st XI cricket team, meaning I was mentioned in Wisden and appeared in the boys only photos in the Classroom Block at the time. How things have changed!
Wellington taught me self-belief and self-confidence. I went to university, obtained an honours degree in Law and qualified as a solicitor. I have worked in various organisations of undertaking a variety of work which has challenged, rewarded, and stimulated me throughout my career. Laterally, I have been able to utilise everything that I have learnt, based upon those foundations laid at Wellington, to run a successful legal consultancy which has given me great pleasure.
I grew up in a council house and was the first person in my family to go to a private school and to university. Had it not been for the Assisted Place scheme, I would not have attended Wellington school as my parents could not have afforded to send me there. I am eternally grateful for the commitment and sacrifices my parents made to give me the chance that I had to study at such a great place. I am therefore a firm advocate of trying to preserve those pathways for people of backgrounds such as myself to benefit from the environments that can be created by schools such as Wellington. It is for this reason that I am happy to act as a Giving Day Ambassador supporting the school in its ambitions to continue to assist those students who come from less financially strong backgrounds to have the opportunity to study at Wellington. I consider myself fortunate to be asked to help.

Kevin Callan, Darks, 1974

Hello, my name is Kevin Callan and I was in Darks House at Wellington from 1970-74. I had the very good fortune to be awarded a Scholarship to Wellington after taking the relevant exam as a 13-year-old. Proving, perhaps, that you can fool some of the people some of the time! Back then my father was an Army Lieutenant Colonel stationed overseas. To ensure that our education was not constantly interrupted by the moves that go with different Army postings, he managed to put my brother and myself through Prep School, then Wellington School (both of us, my brother also being an OW) and then University. The Scholarship from Wellington significantly eased the financial burden at a time when the armed forces did not provide anything like the support they do nowadays for private education.
I am extremely grateful to the School for the sound backing in all sorts of academic and soft skills which it gave me, and all the more grateful for the Scholarship which helped make life so much easier for our family. The awarding of Scholarships and Bursaries helps make Wellington a place of opportunity for pupils from all sorts of different backgrounds. It is a tradition which definitely deserves our continued support.

I didn’t have the most normal of educations. After out growing local primary education, Wellington opened its doors to me in the prep form. After a year in the chapel choir I ended up working in the West End and tv until I left school 8 years later.

When I was working away, Wellington gave me the bespoke support far and above any other school could afford to give one pupil and when I was at school, it gave my situation the personal understanding that any other school could have dismissed as unacceptable.

A private and expensive education isn’t just for the successful academic but can also be a safe, responsible space to nurture the successful artist.

A private education should be an option for all. Unfortunately, that’s not possible but I was one of the lucky ones. I received the last assisted place. A bursary paid by the government to pay for my private education. Not only have these ended but the newly added VAT has made Wellington even less available to people like me. By creating more bursaries internally we can continue this legacy to educate tomorrow’s doctors, sports men and women … and ‘West End Lovies’.”

"To say Wellington School shaped my life would be an understatement. The vast majority of good things in my life have happened as a direct result of my time at Wellington - my family, my friends, my family's friends...the list is endless. I am fortunate to have had this incredible start to my life and for its momentum to be carrying me to this day. My biggest lesson is understanding how the smallest thing can have the most enduring impact - a few words from a teacher, the kindness of an older student - and I am keen to play my part in paying this forward to help others and to quite literally change worlds."

Outdoor Education at Wellington: few things are as beneficial to the human animal than being outdoors, and at Wellington we get out, on the hill, at the crag, on the water and in the cave, as often as we can.

Wellington has been the cornerstone of my life—student, parent, and staff member. When I joined Year 6, a teacher (PFN) gave me the best advice I’ve ever received: 'Start every day with kindness.' It’s a simple yet powerful principle that has stayed with me. The assisted place I received gave me a wonderful start, for which I am truly grateful. Thank you for being a part of my journey.
